Long have I wanted to play the original RE2. I’ve completed the remake 3-4 times (with all four scenarios), but as for original a lot of things kept delaying the inevitable. But the time has come (and so has this copy). And boy am I glad that I’ve played it. Though I enjoyed the remake (scenarios A to be precise, since scenarios B have only 5 differences: 1) the town section which was already extremely short in A is gone and you’re being teleported to the station; 2) the police station main hall is no longer a safe place; 3) the pattern of riddles is a bit different; 4) Mister X appears before helicopter crash site; 5) the final form of Birkin) and the new team managed to nicely combine the original trilogy with the camera and controls of RE 4 and bring the vibe of the original in 50-60% at least (unlike RE 3 Remake), but the original is still unbeatable. It is much more atmospheric in terms of the start run through the city, monsters (including giant spiders, which are no longer in the series), the fear that you forgot something important and you may not have enough ammo or healing stuff (although I felt that RE 2 is more action oriented than the first game), the music that perfectly captures the vibe of certain situations (this is what modern RE games lack a lot), the sounds (not Silent Hill 1, but hey, it’ll be released a year later) and the graphics (especially with Birkin transformations, which are shown for almost all of his forms during the game. And that scares a lot more than the boss already appears fully transformed, since you see that this creature used to be a human. Why can’t Capcom do that thing they did many decades ago with less budget and worse technology?), though of course now it looks outdated but this is the case when old graphics works perfectly for the atmosphere. The voice acting is… not as laughable as in RE 1, but far from perfect. There are less riddles in the og and they’re not as long as in the remake, but more importantly. The B scenarios do feel like an addition to A scenario with new cutscenes, different flow in the lab and sewer sequence, and Mister X appears only in scenarios B with a cutscene of his appearance (unlike remake). BTW he’s not bad as an improvement of the Tyrant of the first game, but he’s not nearly as deadly and scary like Nemesis in RE 3 og (ironically it’ll be quite the opposite in the remakes). In general I think RE 2 is the best game in the series of original RE games before RE 4. Now it looks outdated in terms of graphics and controls (and I’d prefer the remake of this game with camera and controls of RE 4 but a much higher devotion to the original like RE 1 remake), but it’s still worth trying. For only like this have I fully experienced this game.
